The hours seem to take pleasure in moving sluggishly slow as we wait in anticipation for the long awaited release that is winter break. The days leading up to it tend to be the worst, as we know freedom is only hours away. We find ourselves tuning out during the humdrum of lectures, fixating on the second hand of the clock, and imaging the sound of the dismissal bell. All of a sudden, a group of students stride in and transform the monotony into melody: it’s the winter carolers!
This group of talented singers annually bring a unique twist on the classic caroling to the classrooms of Biotechnology High School for 4th and 5th block. For a brief period they turn sanitary labs into stages to lift the morale of students, their enthusiasm and holiday spirit is an infectious tune.
This tradition is organized by the Arts and Entertainment club, and this year's seniors Meera Nair and Shivani Bisabathuni. Both leaders agree that caroling is a great way to boost the morale of our student body before winter break. Meera notes that this was especially important in prior years when Battle of the Classes had not taken place before winter break. Shivani adds that “it’s a great way for people from all grades to get involved and perform together.” Fostering this sense of unity is significant to both the spirit of the holidays and our school community.
The songs chosen this year ranged from traditional to modern adaptations of winter themed songs. The collection includes: “Baby Please Come Home,” Pitch Perfect's "Here Comes Santa Claus/Winter Wonderland,” “Dreidel Song,” and “Feliz Navidad.” This wide array of choices resonates deeply with the diversity of tastes and backgrounds at Biotechnology High School. Whether you grew up listening to classics like “Baby Please Come Home” and “Dreidel Song,” enjoy more contemporary versions like Pitch Perfect’s remix, or don’t celebrate a holiday at all, it is a tradition that you can enjoy.
As the break approaches, the caroling tradition is a testament to not only the holiday spirit but the unity in our school. It is a reminder that despite our pining for freedom, when we are in school, it is a place where people of different ages and cultures can celebrate together. Happy holidays to everyone at Biotech! ❧
